60 women broke the stereotypes in beekeeping

After 12 months of intense work, the beekeeping school for women organized by USAID/Sweden FARMA II project was closed in Laktaši. Sixty women from Laktaši, Teslić, Kotor Varoš, Gradiška, Sanski Most and Ključ successfully completed the school.

Within the activity entitled "Support to women entrepreneurship through beekeeping and cultivation of herbs", participants completed intensive training on the modern beekeeping practices, and will be supported in the next year with individual mentoring. The women also received beekeeping equipment (total value BAM 37,000), including the basic set for starting the beekeeping production.

Marie Bergstrom, head of development cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden in Bosnia and Herzegovina, said that one of the reasons for supporting B&H is to assist the country on its road to the European Union. "We think that it is very important to encourage the economic development through job creation, as the life of women in rural areas is not easy at all", Bergstrom stated.

Ranko Karapetrović, mayor of Laktaši municipality, which also supported the implementation of this project, said that he is satisfied with the successful implementation of the project, which is very important for the women from this region. "This project will strengthen the market skills of the women engaged and I believe it will also help them improve their financial situation", Karapetrović told the press. One of the project beneficiaries from Sanski Most, Alma Zukić, said that over the last year the women have worked and learned a lot, and produced the first quantities of honey. "I was not involved in beekeeping before and this is an excellent experience for me and the whole team from Sanski Most", Zukić stated.

Miodrag Matavulj, director of the Center for Economic and Rural Development (CERD), which implemented this project, stated that the objective of the project was to teach women how to produce honey and start their own business.
