USAID visits Silver Awarding winning cheese cooperative

Cooperative “Zlatna kap”, opened in 2008, is a mini-cheese production that is successfully producing some of the most famous cheeses in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The latest confirmation of their success and dedcication to work came from Belgrade, where they won Silver medal for Best Cheese at VII Balkan Cheese Festival, wehich took place 16-17 February this year.

That was one, among other reasons, why USAID BiH director, Peter Duffy, decided to visit this cooperative, which has received USAID/Swden FARMA II grant for improving the competitiveness and market access for dairy producers from BiH.

“We have 250 coopérants now and 90% of them are women. Women are the driving force of this cooperative. Since we started production in 2008, we have gradually expanded both production and coopérants. Our aim is to process all the milk that we buy into quality cheese” stated Maid Smaic, manager of Zlatna kap coopérative in Jelah.

“I really admire how this cooperative has taken a risk and is now supporting over 250 local families. This is exactly what we, USAID and Sweden, as donors, want to encourage. It is a great example of how hard honest work and determination can positively impact on rural communities in BiH,” stated Peter Duffy during the visit.
